February is the shortest month of the year, but it’s a busy one! On February 2nd, the groundhog predicted an early spring in Ontario (though the current forecast may disagree with him) and we just watched the Super Bowl this past Sunday. Nearly halfway through the month, there’s plenty more to come: the week ahead includes Valentine’s Day on Friday, February 14th followed by Family Day on Monday, February 17th.
While these particular events don’t typically involve the same level of planning and tradition as other holidays, they’re still worth enjoying. Here are some simple tips for making Valentine’s Day and Family Day special for your aging loved ones. Thanks for reading and if you’d like to know more about high quality homecare services in Toronto and the surrounding communities, please contact us. We’d be glad to hear from you!
Valentine’s Day
There’s nothing like getting a thoughtful, handwritten note on Valentine’s Day. Consider sending your older relatives a traditional Valentine with a message that reminds them that they’re loved. If you have kids, ask them to make homemade Valentine’s Day cards for older family members (or a drawing, if they’re very young). You can also deliver Valentine’s Day-themed cookies or cupcakes to your loved ones (low sugar if necessary) or plan a special visit on February 14th. Afternoon tea can be a pleasant experience for you and your aging family members, whether you book a table at a local restaurant or make it happen in the comfort of their home. Remember, Valentine’s Day isn’t just about romance—love is worth celebrating in all of its forms, including the love we feel for our family members.
Family Day
If you’re planning a Family Day meal or activity, consider including older family members. If they aren’t able to join you outside of their home, plan a visit that coincides with the holiday. This might involve sharing a meal, playing a game of cards, catching up over a cup or tea, or watching a movie together. Not only will your aging loved ones enjoy the quality time you spend together, they’ll appreciate being included. (If you live out of town or are otherwise unable to visit, be sure to call them on Family Day and let them know you’re thinking about them. This simple gesture can be very meaningful!)
