Dental care is an important part of every individual’s healthcare routine but as we age, it becomes even more important to take care of those pearly whites. According to Health Canada, good oral hygiene can actually help prevent the development of lung infections like pneumonia—especially for seniors who have issues swallowing food and liquids. This is because pneumonia is sometimes caused by the inhalation of harmful bacteria from the mouth, and proper oral hygiene helps to reduce the presence of this bacteria. It’s pretty incredible!
A few other points to know about seniors and dental care:
- Individuals with diabetes are at higher risk of mouth infections including gum disease, which can damage the soft tissue and bones within one’s mouth and lead to painful chewing problems as well as lost teeth
- Gum disease can also make it more difficult for diabetics to control their blood sugar levels
- Poor oral health increases an individual’s risk of heart attack and stroke due to the harmful bacteria in one’s mouth travelling through their bloodstream/to the organs in the form of toxins
- On a social level, dental issues can have a negative impact on self-esteem which leads to fewer social interactions, a higher risk of loneliness and isolation, and is generally associated with a lower quality of life (source: Health Canada)
That’s a lot to consider, but it can all be prevented by proactive dental care at every age and stage of life. Here are some tips to help avoid the issues described above.
- See your dentist on a regular basis. This means getting regular cleanings and check-ups, plus going whenever you have acute dental problems (pain, a cracked tooth, etc).
- Brush your teeth consistently and well! This will help reduce the buildup of those nasty germs we talked about above. Consider an electric toothbrush or handle modifier if mobility is an issue.
- Use an antibacterial mouthwash for the same reason. Plus, it will help you feel fresh and clean all day long.
- Floss (just like your hygienist always says!) or use a waterpik as needed.
- Take care of your dentures if applicable. Keep them clean and well-maintained, and seek help from a dental professional if you have any questions or concerns. This link also has some great tips on denture care.
