We recently came across this great post on Quora that really hit home with our team. “Is it really worth it to live past 80 years old?” the post asks. At first, this question seems jarring—after all, there’s a serious implication that life is less valuable or worthwhile after a certain age—but when you stop and think about it, it’s a thought that’s widely shared in many communities. You hear it when people discuss not wanting to get older, or in subtle but revealing comments about older generations. People fear aging for a variety of reasons and unfortunately, this fear can result in a negative association with hitting those milestone birthdays.
At Living Assistance Service, we know that these milestones are worth celebrating and yes, you can live a beautiful, happy, healthy life well into your 80s, 90s and beyond. We see this in action every day! There is no expiration date on a person’s quality of life, and we strive to help individuals live well and enjoy each day no matter what their age.
Live your best life (always!)
Seniors should never be counted out, even when physical or cognitive challenges are present. Not everyone ages the same way—we’ve known plenty of seniors who swim laps at a local pool, ride a bike or go golfing with friends and family on the weekend. They love to travel, socialize and volunteer in their communities. They’re forever learning and growing—something that should never stop, no matter what your age—and above all, they’re enjoying life.
As people grow older, they may not be able to keep up with the activities they once loved—but often, they can continue to participate in these elements of their life with the appropriate support. The secret is to modify activities rather than walking away from them completely. If you can’t jog anymore? Go for a walk. Can’t play 18 holes of golf? Play nine. Can’t read because your vision is failing? Try audiobooks. You can try a gentle aquafit class instead of swimming laps and use anything from apps to mobility devices to support your interests and independence. It isn’t always easy, but anything is possible.
There is always a way to maintain a love for life and a sense of everyday enjoyment—it just takes a little effort, some support and a positive attitude that allows you to embrace aging rather than fearing it. We’re glad to be a part of so many families’ support systems, offering everything from personal care to meal preparation, light housekeeping services and assistance with errands outside the home.
